Sikkim
ia land of monumental mountains that seem to touch the sky.
The mountains form a part of long and mighty Himalaya. Kanchanjunga,
the third highest peak of the world, crowns the top with its
rugged outline. Sikkim, states of India, shares her borders
with Tibet to the north, Bhutan to the east, Nepal to the
west and the state of West Bengal to the south.
The area of Sikkim is 73000 sq.km, measuring approx.100 km
from north to the south and 60 km from east to west. The elevation
ranges from 244 m to over 8540m above the sea level.
The flora and fauna naturally covers a wide spectrum as no
where else in the world. In such a small area one can find
4000 varieties of flowering plants, orchids (some 600 varieties)
and rhododendrons. Naturalists have catalogued over 550 species
of birds and over 600 species of butterflies. Animals to be
found are Himalayan bear, musk and barking deer , red panda
and the blue sheep.
The people of Sikkim are of three distinct heritage, the Lepchas,
Bhutias and the Nepalese. Sikkimese by nature are simple,
polite and non-aggressive people with a natural gaiety.
Entry Foramlities: All foreign
guests intending to visit Sikkim must hold valid Indian visa
and Inner Line Permit which is issued by all Indian Missions
abroad for 15 days and extension for 10 days can be obtained
in Gangtok, Sikkim.
Season: Mid February to late May & September
to December.
Climate: Summer 20 to 24 degree Celsius &
Winter 01 to 12 degree Celsius
Access: From Nepal Biratnagar and Bhadrapur are the
nearest airport to the border Kakarvitta, which is 146 km
from Gangtok by road.
Accommodation: There are
good modern hotels in Gangtok, Pemayangtse and number of good
resorts/lodges are also set up in Ravangla south district
of Sikkim.

of 1700m and population over 50,000 with monasteries and colorful
market.
Rumtek: The Head Quarter of Karma Kargupa
sect of Mahayana, Buddhism, 24 km from Gangtok.
Martam: A small village 5 km beyond Rumtek
with a village resort.
Phodong: 38 km from Gangtok at north Sikkim
with monastery that houses old paintings.
Lachung: A small alpine village with ethnic lifestyle
123 km from Gangtok, falls in the restricted area at north
Sikkim.
Yumthang: At an altitude of 3600m valley
of exotic alpine flowers, hot spring which is 34 km from Lachung.
Temi: South of Sikkim the only Tea Estate
of Sikkim.
Pemayangtse: Situated at 2085m elevation
and 121 km from Gangtok in west Sikkim seat of Sikkim's most
important monastery, with breath taking view of Mount Kanchanjunga
and other mountains.
Tashiding: A village in west Sikkim with
sacred "Chorten" and monastery on the hill-top.
Yuksum: A small hamlet at 1780m in west Sikkim, Base Camp
for trekking in Sikkim, 143 km from Gangtok.
Darjeeling: The world famous hill station
in the neighbouring state of West Bengal, famed for its beauty
and the Darjeeling Tea, 101 km from Gangtok.
Kalimpong: A small quite town in the district
of Darjeeling noted for flower nurseries, 78 km from Gangtok.
